FERTITEC Project: Turning Waste into High-Quality Fertilizers

Project Overview

Agriculture today faces growing challenges related to waste management, declining soil fertility, and the need for more sustainable farming practices. Conventional fertiliser production often relies on finite natural resources and can contribute to environmental degradation. As a result, innovative approaches that transform waste into valuable agricultural inputs are increasingly important.

The FERTITEC Project is addressing these challenges by converting waste and secondary raw materials into high-quality, sustainable fertilisers. Funded by the European Union, the project promotes a circular economy approach that recovers nutrients from waste streams and returns them to agricultural production systems, reducing environmental impact while supporting improved crop productivity.

Building on the knowledge and innovations generated through previous EU-funded initiatives, including Novafert, SUSFERT, NUTRIMAN, SOILUTIONS, FER-PLAY, MainstreamBIO, and others, FERTITEC seeks to advance sustainable fertiliser solutions that are both environmentally responsible and economically viable.

Project Objectives

FERTITEC aims to:

  • Transform organic waste and secondary raw materials into high-quality fertilisers.
  • Promote circular economy principles through nutrient recovery and recycling.
  • Reduce environmental impacts associated with waste disposal and conventional fertiliser production.
  • Improve agricultural productivity through sustainable fertilisation practices.
  • Support the development of competitive bio-based fertiliser products.
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange and innovation through multi-stakeholder engagement.
  • Contribute to EU objectives on sustainable agriculture, waste reduction, and bioeconomy development.
  • Share lessons and recommendations beyond Europe, including with stakeholders across the African Union region.

Through collaboration with farmers, researchers, policymakers, and industry actors, FERTITEC is fostering practical solutions that support resilient and sustainable agricultural systems. The project will demonstrate and promote best available fertilising technologies in several European countries while facilitating the transfer of knowledge and good practices to other regions, including Africa.

Expected Impact

FERTITEC is expected to contribute to the wider adoption of alternative fertiliser products, strengthen resource efficiency in agriculture, and support the transition towards more sustainable food production systems. By turning waste into valuable resources, the project is helping create a more circular, productive and environmentally sustainable agricultural sector.
